Charles "Chuck" Ray Points

August 24, 1946 - August 25, 2016

On Aug. 25, 2016 God rejoiced and his angels sang as they welcomed Charles Ray Points to the Kingdom of Heaven. Chuck was a quiet, loving, humorous, and compassionate soul whom will be profoundly missed.

Charles, "Chuck" to all who knew him, was born in Waterloo, Iowa Aug. 24, 1946. Early in his life, his family moved to Eugene, where he lived for many years. He graduated from South Eugene High School in 1964 and married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Lee Atkins, in 1966.

With honor, heroism, and compassion Chuck served his country as an U.S. Navy corpsman from 1965 to 1971. He fought for our country in the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1967, receiving a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. While in Vietnam, not only did he experience fierce, active combat, but he also selflessly provided medical care to multiple Vietnamese villages. The villagers were so thankful for this care that they constructed a building specifically for Chuck to provide his generous gift of healing to the villagers.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Chuck and Sharon welcomed the birth of their daughter, Dawn, in 1969. It was soon after, that Chuck attended the first established funeral directing program at Mt. Hood Community College obtaining his Funeral Director/Embalmer license in 1970. His career took his family to Coos Bay where he and Sharon welcomed their second daughter, Mindi, in 1971.

Chuck spent many years working in Eugene, where he and his father owned and operated Points Excavating. In the '80s, Chuck chose to resume serving others, returning to funeral directing and working for Columbia Funeral Home, then Coos Bay and North Bend chapels. He retired in 2003, due to disabilities received while serving his country in the Vietnam War, allowing him to enjoy his remaining years with his wife and family.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughter, Dawn Points; daughter, Mindi Burdick and her husband, Mike; grandson, Jordon Burdick and his wife, Meredith; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Bryson; granddaughter, Kelsie Burdick and her fiancé, Daniel Olsen; sisters-in law, Jean and Yvonne and both their spouses; and multiple nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

Chuck and Sharon would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary On October 2, 2016. They were fortunate enough to have celebrated their anniversary on Aug. 20 with a small family gathering. Sharon's beloved will be intensely missed.

A service honoring Chuck will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Good Shepard Lutheran Church, 85780 McBeth Road in Eugene. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery with family at a later date.
