Gordon was born in Fargo, N.D., to Ole and Gea Mickelson. He passed away in The Dalles.

Gordon met and married Lois Collicott in 1942 in Yakima, Wash., shortly before leaving for Germany during World War II. In 1957, Gordon and Lois moved their family to Coos Bay, where Gordon was employed by the Coos Bay School District for more than 20 years as a bus driver and bus mechanic.
