In Memory of James Talmadge HOLDEN July 27, 1922 - February 9, 2016 Obituary It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but neither a thousand pictures, nor an infinite number of words could pay adequate tribute to James T. Holden of Sherwood, Oregon who was called home at the age of 93 this February 9, 2016. Jim passed from this life in the company of loved ones and friends, and while his passing was mourned with tears, he was also celebrated with laughter which is the hallmark of a life well-lived. Jim worked as a bus driver for Rose City Transit and as a cab driver for Broadway Cab in the Portland Metro area. In later years, he drove school bus for the Hoopa Indian Reservation in Northern California. He had a gift for music and would never hesitate to reach for his beloved Martin guitar when anyone asked him to play. When he sang, his beautiful baritone voice had just enough of a Louisiana drawl to be utterly charming. He told a story better than anyone and his sense of humor was legendary. Jim had a deep and abiding love for animals. He never went without a dog or two, and usually his dogs were lucky enough to have their own cat. He was unwaveringly devoted to them once they became a part of his family. This was clearly evidenced in his relationship with "Tufy" his last dog who always rode shot gun and walked faithfully by his side for almost 20 years. Jim was also a World War II Veteran. He served in the United States Army as a soldier (2nd Infantry Division, 38th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Battalion). He stormed the beaches of Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Hedgerows where he was wounded and was the recipient of a Purple Heart. He is survived by Gary Holden (Son), John Crossen (Son-in-Law), Carol Crossen (Daughter), David Holden (Son), Dave Troyer (Son-in-Law) and Sandy Troyer (Daughter), as well as 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren all of whom he loved dearly. Services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery on February 26th at 12:30pm. |
