Skamania Fire District 1 May 17 at 8:22 AM · As our fire district and community mourn the loss of one of our own volunteer firefighters, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the impact Braden Hegewald had on this Earth in his short 21 years of life. Braden's level of commitment to serving his country and community was unwavering. Braden joined Skamania County Fire District 1 in 2015 at the age of 16. From the day he stepped boot in Station 1-1, Braden's humble yet powerful presence set a standard amongst his peers that set precedence in the volunteer firefighting community, and will for many years to come. Braden proved his level of dedication by applying his entire self to the Army Reserves, SCFD1, Wind River/SCSO Search and Rescue and the SCSO Explorers Program, all while working at jobs harder than the rest. In April of 2020, there was an article published titled '10 traits of all great firefighters'. Those 10 traits are listed as follows: 1. Integrity 2. Physical fitness 3. Communication 4. Adaptability 5. Dedication 6. Team player 7. Mechanical aptitude 8. Public-image conscious 9. Tolerance 10. Self-sacrifice. The fire service seeks those who exhibit volunteer spirit and people who are involved in their communities because they want to be, surly not for self benefit. These are rare and unique traits that describe precisely who Braden was. Braden was respected and admired by all who knew him, young and old, and will forever ride in the hearts of his brother and sister firefighters of Skamania County Fire District 1. We know the fish and game will be abundant in the hills of Heaven. Our hearts go out to Braden's family. |
