Joining the Air Force straight out of OSU, Dave became a fighter pilot, fighter pilot instructor, and a promotion to Air Training Squadron Commander. Dave served 25-years, retiring with the rank of Colonel. For his service to his country, Dave He was awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Combat Readiness Medal.
Dave was a member of numerous boards and organizations, including the Oregon Governor's Veterans Advisory Committee, COMOAA, VFW, DAV, OVMA, the Patriot Guard Riders, and Partners-in-Care Hospice. Dave worked tirelessly for his fellow Veterans.

Bend, Oregon

David Paul Fairclo, aged 67 years, passed away on Thursday March 5, 2015 in Bend, Oregon, surrounded by his family. He was born September 1, 1947 in Klamath Falls to Paul and Ann (Stevenson) Fairclo.

David was raised on a family farm and cattle ranch with locations near Henley High School where he graduated. His college education included degrees of BSBA and MBA.

At OSU, he joined AFROTC, and later attended AF flight school and graduated at the top of his class. David had varied and challenging posts with the Air Force, including Flying Command Post, Air Base Commander, Pentagon assignment, and the ROTC program at University of Connecticut.

David married the former Paddi Harris on March 6, 2012 in Bend, Oregon. They attended Real Life Christian Church. He was a member of numerous boards and organizations including Partners in Care, and St. Charles Hospital. Dave worked tirelessly for his fellow Veterans. He helped initiate the Bend Veterans Day parade, was instrumental in establishing the daily DAV van shuttle to/from the Portland VA hospital, pushed for the expansion of the VA clinic in Bend, helped introduce the effective Veterans’ programs in Circuit Courts around Oregon, and assisted with the introduction of housing vouchers for distressed Veterans. Dave loved all things aviation, motorcycles, traveling and cowboy history. He also built houses with Habitat.

Retired Colonel David Fairclo is survived by his beloved wife Paddi; children Eli (Heather) Harris of Sweet home, Joshua, Peter, Micah and Isaiah all of Bend; his mother Ann, brother Richard (Sharon) and sister Susan Fairclo (John)House all of Klamath Falls; also 7 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father.

On March 13, 2013 visitation will be held at the Real life Christian Church 2880 NE 27th, Bend, at 11:30 am;an OVMA and PGR motorcade will proceed to Deschutes Memorial Gardens N Hwy 97. Pastor Yunker shall conduct Graveside Services with full Military Honors at 1:00PM.

Governor Makes Appointments to Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs Advisory Committee (Salem, Oregon) — Governor Ted Kulongoski has appointed two new members to the Oregon Department of Veterans’ Affairs (ODVA) Advisory Committee (ODVA). Charles E. Schmidt of Harney County and David P. Fairclo of Deschutes County, Oregon, will fill the two open vacancies on the nine-member committee. Both served in the military for many years and share a deep commitment to serving Oregon veterans.

“These two men round out our outstanding Governor’s Advisory Committee, bringing with them years of experience and knowledge of issues facing veterans in their respective areas of the state. It is truly a privilege to have both of these outstanding individuals on board,” said Jim Willis, ODVA Director.

Retired Colonel David Fairclo, a Bend resident, served as an active duty pilot for 25 years with the United States Air Force. He has also served as President of the Military Officers Association and was instrumental in lobbying congress to establish the Department of Veterans Affairs Outpatient Clinic in Bend, Oregon. Fairclo volunteers as a driver for the Disabled American Veterans van, transporting Central Oregon veterans to the Portland DVA Medical Center on a daily basis. Colonel Fairclo has demonstrated extraordinary leadership and knowledge of issues confronting veterans east of the Cascades.

An Air Force veteran of 27 years, Retired Major Charles Schmidt has worked tirelessly on behalf of veterans—raising awareness not only for their military service but also their needs after their service. A longtime member of the American Legion, Schmidt has held a variety of leadership positions including Commander of the American Legion District #10 in Harney County and his current service as Department Vice Commander. Schmidt is determined to make a difference in the lives of veterans.

Both new members have been appointed to a four year term.
