"Donald James Douthit (52) who served with the United States Air Force 1984 to 1988. We understand that he served nearly 2 years with the Oregon National Guard prior to the Air Force. Mr Douthit was on the line as an aircraft Mechanic. Don was a homeless individual, estranged from the few members left of his family. Don had a patch over one eye. For years he often walked with a small dog. He was a pleasant individual and very well known around the community, especially among those on a path less fortunate than some. He had brain cancer in the 90's and was treated by the V.A. His illness may have contributed to the life he chose to live. A number of folks over the years had attempted to help him with housing and so forth but he drifted back to the road. He had some disability income and we are told that his generosity to others will be remembered. He was found one cold morning recently in his tent. There were no signs of foul play. He had helped a local Pastor at one time and the community has risen up through that association to honor a Veteran. His military service has been certified by WNC and those details for interment will be at a later date. God rest your soul, Don Douthit. Thank you for your service." (Source: PGR Website) |
