He was born in Ravenden Springs, Ark., the son of Lewis and Wilma (Parker) Knauss. He lived in Arkansas until moving to California at the age of 14. Following graduation from high school he entered the Air Force and served during the Korean conflict. He returned to California after his discharge and went into carpentry.
Elmer married Nona Lee Mays on June 15, 1958, in Oakley, Calif. Elmer then attended college, graduating from West Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in education. He took his first teaching position in Naselle, Wash., and later returned to Amarillo, Texas, and continued his teaching career. They moved to Oregon in 1983 and Elmer taught at the Opportunity Center in Albany until retiring. They settled in the Lebanon area in 1994.
Elmer was a member of the Lebanon Four Square Church. He loved fishing, woodworking, old cars and doing problem-solving puzzles.
Elmer is survived by his wife, Nona of Lebanon; daughters Teri of Germantown, Tenn., Marianne of Richmond, Calif., Moni
of Sweet Home, and Marci of Kingsport, Tenn.; sisters Ellorie
of Salem and Bonnie of Oakley; and seven grandchildren.
A private family inurnment will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Huston-Jost Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
